May 9, 2024

During the ongoing criminal trial, Donald Trump’s lawyer questioned Stormy Daniels about discrepancies in her account of an alleged 2006 encounter, aiming to discredit her testimony.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, his lawyer, Susan Necheles, scrutinized porn star Stormy Daniels for inconsistencies in her account of an alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006. This encounter reportedly took place in a Lake Tahoe hotel suite while Trump was married to Melania Trump.

Daniels, who has previously provided vivid details of the encounter, captivated jurors this Tuesday, rehashing aspects of Trump’s character during his presidency as he attempts a 2024 White House run. Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a $130,000 payment made by his former lawyer Michael Cohen to Daniels. This payment was allegedly made to prevent her from disclosing the encounter ahead of the 2016 election. Trump has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.

Necheles’ cross-examination, spanning nearly four hours over two days, probed variations in Daniels’ retellings in her book, various interviews, and her court testimony. Specific details, such as the non-mention of Trump’s bodyguard’s presence outside the hotel room in a 2018 Vogue interview, were highlighted. Daniels maintained her consistency, stating, “You’re trying to make me say that it changed, but it hasn’t changed.”

The trial also touched on political implications, with Trump suggesting the charges are politically motivated to hamper his campaign against Democratic President Joe Biden. However, the focus of the trial remains on the alleged concealment of the payment to Daniels and its implications on the 2016 election’s integrity.

Daniels stood firm against Necheles’ questioning, denying any change in her story and clarifying that she controlled neither the interview narratives published by media outlets nor the specific details they chose to focus on.

As the trial progresses, Trump’s interactions in court have drawn attention. At one point, his apparent muttered remark dismissing Daniels’ testimony as “bullshit” prompted a rebuke from Justice Juan Merchan, who has already fined Trump $10,000 for comments about jurors and witnesses. Merchan warned of potential jail time for further violations of the court’s gag order.

The case against Trump in New York is one of several legal battles he faces, including charges related to the 2020 election and classified documents. Yet, this trial, focusing on Daniels’ allegations and Trump’s financial dealings, poses significant implications for his public and political image as he seeks re-election.

Trump lawyer Todd Blanche said the defense would make a renewed motion for a mistrial on the basis of Stormy Daniels’ testimony.

The judge said he would ask the jury to leave half an hour early on Thursday and would take up the renewed request then.

On Tuesday Justice Juan Merchan denied a previous mistrial request.
