Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmyhal, issued a stark warning to the reporter asserting that if Ukraine loses its ongoing conflict with Russia, it could escalate into a “Third World War.” Shmyhal emphasized the urgency of passing a long-pending foreign aid bill in the US Congress, which has $61 billion earmarked for Kyiv’s defense.
Expressing “careful optimism” regarding the passage of the aid package, Shmyhal urged swift action, emphasizing that the funds are crucial for Ukraine’s survival. He stressed that without adequate support, Ukraine’s fall would not only jeopardize its security but also disrupt the global system, potentially leading to widespread conflicts.
The aid package, set for a vote in the House of Representatives, includes funding not only for Ukraine but also for Israel and the Indo-Pacific region. Shmyhal’s plea comes amidst concerns over Russian aggression and the implications of a possible Ukrainian defeat.
In response to criticism and skepticism, particularly from Kremlin officials and some Republican lawmakers, Shmyhal highlighted the influence of disinformation and propaganda, emphasizing the need to counter such narratives effectively.
The delay in aid has already had significant consequences on the ground, with Ukraine facing challenges in maintaining its defense against Russian forces. The shortage of weapons and ammunition has forced Ukrainian troops into retreat, with recent losses including the strategic town of Avdiivka.
