More Chinese-based illegal immigrants were encountered at the U.S. southern border in just two days than in all of fiscal year 2021, according to Fox News’ Bill Melugin. On May 1 and May 2, Border Patrol agents in the San Diego sector apprehended approximately 262 and 223 Chinese migrants respectively, a source told Melugin. This number greatly surpasses the 323 Chinese nationals apprehended throughout the entirety of fiscal year 2021, as reported by CBP.

The increase in Chinese migrants illegally crossing the southern border has been significant under the Biden administration, with 1,970 illegal migrant apprehensions in fiscal year 2022, and a sharp rise to 24,048 in fiscal year 2023. In the first six months of fiscal year 2024, the number has already topped 24,200, according to the data.

These figures do not include illegals who have managed to enter the US without being apprehended.

Bill Melugin’s recent tweet highlights that more than 21,000 Chinese have been apprehended by Border Patrol in just the San Diego sector since October 1st.

Gordon Chang, a China affairs expert, explained the exodus by pointing to “extreme pessimism, especially among people in their 20s about the future of their country,” making it “understandable that they’re leaving and they’re trying to get into the United States.” Chang further suggested that some of these migrants might be Ministry of State Security agents or Chinese military personnel coming to the U.S. to commit acts of sabotage, as he told the Daily Caller News Foundation in May 2023.

Additionally, the Biden administration loosened vetting process standards for Chinese immigrants seeking to enter the country illegally in April 2023, according to an internal CBP email previously obtained by the DCNF. The email instructed Border Patrol agents to reduce the number of questions asked from 40 to five, thereby fast-tracking the migrants’ release into the U.S.

Overall, there were approximately 1.6 million migrant encounters at the southern border in fiscal year 2021, with the number rising to over 2 million in fiscal year 2023 and over a million thus far in fiscal year 2024, as reported by CBP.

In a fiery opinion piece written by Jeremy Hunt on Wednesday, he stated:

“It doesn’t take a top-secret clearance to imagine why this should be alarming,” Hunt wrote.

“China already has a long history of spying in in the United States recently. They launched a spy balloon that collected intelligence while roaming free in American airspace; the Chinese police centers discovered in New York City; China’s attempts to purchase farmland near strategic military bases; seven Chinese nationals caught hacking on China’s behalf for over 14 years; and the list goes on. Anyone who thinks that China’s sophisticated intelligence operations will not exploit the border crisis simply isn’t paying attention.”

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
