Yankton Bike Trail To Expand Around Lake Yankton

Apr 18, 2021 | ,

(KVHT) – Bikers and hikers will soon be able to make their way completely around Lake Yankton via the Yankton area trail network. A new expansion is underway between the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery and Aquarium and the Chief White Crane campground. Preparations for the trail began last year. The trail winds through a wooded area along the lake’s northeast shoreline. Shane Bertsch is the district park supervisor for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. According to Bertsch, a gravel base will cover the trail in early May, with paving of the new trail expected to wrap up in time for the Fourth of July weekend. The trail upgrade will provide safe and enjoyable recreation to the hatchery and aquarium from Chief White Crane. Trail funding was provided by a grant from the Recreation Trails Program (RTP). That program grants funds to the states through the Federal Highway Administration and the gas tax to fund motorized and non-motorized trail projects.
