Road Load Limits Discussed By Yankton County Commissioners

(KVHT) – Yankton County Commissioners made changes to road load limits in the county. Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to move forward with spring load limits of 6 tons per axle on county roads. They also agreed to a few limited exceptions allowing for 7 tons per axle. There was some discussion following the vote, however, after one local businessowner voiced their concern on seeking an exception on a specific stretch of road leading to a gravel pit west of Highway 81. According to Yankton County Highway Superintendent Mike Sedlacek there is already a growing number of exceptions to the 6 ton per axle rule. Sedlacek said it could start opening up a can of worms as more and more exceptions will be requested. He said that although he agrees with the ease of getting in and out of the gravel pit for 7-ton axle vehicles, but added where do the exceptions stop? The commission opted to let the resolution stand as passed, but will reconsider the move during a previously scheduled special meeting Monday, January 25th. Sedlacek was asked to consult with South Dakota’s Local Transportation Assistance Program in the meantime on what the best course of action would be.
