Replica Antique Car Rolls Over, Seven Ejected
FORT PIERCE, Florida – Six children and a 73-year-old driver were all ejected after the replica antique car they were riding in overturned Thursday night.
Fort Pierce police received the call just before 7 p.m. October 14, after a 1980 Shay Ford Model A Roadster Convertible that was westbound on Avenue D overturned as the driver attempted to make a right turn onto North 31 Street. The 73-year-old driver hit the curb as he was negotiating the turn, causing the antique replica to flip over, ejecting all seven occupants. Four of the six children were riding in the car’s jump seat when the crash occurred.
Three of the children, ages 6, 9 and 10, were airlifted to the pediatric trauma center at Palm Beach Children’s Hospital in West Palm Beach with serious injuries. The driver and three other passengers, ages 4, 8 and 12, were taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center (LRMC) by St. Lucie County Fire Rescue. The driver was admitted to the hospital’s trauma intensive care unit. The three passengers who were taken to LRMC were treated and released.
The intersection was closed to traffic for several hours while traffic homicide and crime scene investigators conducted the on-scene investigation. No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation remains ongoing.
