Evansville F Williams transferring to Memphis
Evansville forward DeAndre Williams is transferring to Memphis.
The 6-foot-9 sophomore averaged 15.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 18 games (15 starts) with the Purple Aces in 2019-20.
He shot 64.8 percent from the field, 45.5 percent from 3-point distance and 80.0 percent from the free throw line. He missed 14 games with a back injury — and Evansville lost all 14 games.
Williams was named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Player of the Week after making 17 of 18 field goals and tallying 37 points and 10 rebounds in a 101-87 win against Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 7.
He announced his transfer Friday night on Instagram Live, choosing head coach Penny Hardaway’s Memphis program over Kentucky, Baylor and Arkansas.
Williams, who was declared academically ineligible for the 2018-19 season at Evansville, has two years of eligibility remaining. He will have to sit out the 2020-21 season unless the NCAA grants a waiver.
