NHL roundup: Lightning work OT for 10th straight win

Feb 28, 2019 | ,

Victor Hedman scored 3:25 into overtime to give Tampa Bay a 4-3 win over the host New York Rangers on Wednesday, stretching the Lightning’s winning streak to a franchise-record 10 games.

Hedman beat Rangers goalie Alexandar Georgiev, who had stopped him on a breakaway in the first minute of overtime. Tampa Bay won its third straight game in overtime or a shootout, moved to 8-0-1 in the first half of back-to-back sets and finished 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Tyler Johnson, J.T. Miller and Dan Girardi also scored for the Lightning, who picked up at least a point in their 14th straight game. Nikita Kucherov had three assists, giving him 23 points in his past nine games and an NHL-best 104 points.

Jimmy Vesey had a goal and an assist, and Mika Zibanejad and Boo Nieves also tallied for the Rangers, who lost in overtime for a second consecutive game.

Blackhawks 4, Ducks 3 (OT)

Alex DeBrincat scored two goals and Patrick Kane added the game-winning goal with 17 seconds remaining as Chicago celebrated the return of goaltender Corey Crawford with a win at Anaheim.

Crawford made 29 saves in his first game since Dec. 16. He had been out due to a concussion. DeBrincat tied the game 3-3 at 15:06 of the third period, his 36th of the season. Artem Anisimov also scored for Chicago. Carter Rowney, Devin Shore and Troy Terry collected goals for the Ducks, who lost their fourth straight.

Kane’s game-winner was his 40th goal of the season, as he also leads the NHL with 44 points since Jan. 1. The Blackhawks snapped a two-game skid and won for the fourth time in the past seven games.

Flames 2, Devils 1

Elias Lindholm and Mark Giordano scored in the second period for red-hot Calgary, which capped a perfect three-game Eastern Conference road swing with a win at Newark, N.J.

David Rittich made 19 saves for the Western Conference-leading Flames, who have won seven straight and allowed one goal in each of the last four victories. Kevin Rooney scored in the second period for the Devils, who got 33 saves from Mackenzie Blackwood.

New Jersey experienced a scare when defenseman Mirco Mueller was carted off the ice 1:09 into the third period. Mueller appeared to hit his head and shoulders against the boards while chasing a rebound deep in the Calgary zone. After a long delay, he gave a thumbs-up as he was wheeled off the playing surface.

Maple Leafs 6, Oilers 2

Andreas Johnsson scored twice during a four-goal Toronto outburst in the second period, and the Leafs went on to beat visiting Edmonton.

Mitch Marner added a goal and two assists while Patrick Marleau, William Nylander and John Tavares each had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have won three straight. Toronto goaltender Frederik Andersen made 34 saves.

Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for the Oilers, who are 3-9-4 in their past 16 games. Darnell Nurse added two assists.

Avalanche 3, Canucks 2 (SO)

Carl Soderberg scored in the sixth round of a shootout, and Colorado beat Vancouver in Denver. The Avalanche have gone 6-1-1 over their past eight games to move into the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Semyon Varlamov had 30 saves through overtime and stopped five more in the shootout to give the Avalanche a rare win after regulation. Colorado is now 2-12 in overtime and shootouts. Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen scored regulation goals for the Avalanche.

Jacob Markstrom had 43 saves but couldn’t stop Soderberg in the shootout. Antoine Roussel and Josh Leivo scored for the Canucks, who are 3-6-3 over their past 12 games.
