GOVERNOR RELEASES BUDGET PROPOSAL

Jan 11, 2019 | ,

NEW MEXICO (KSMX) - Just ahead of the Legislative session in Santa Fe, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham released her first budget proposal yesterday. The proposal calls for a 13 percent increase in spending, and includes $500 million in additional funding for public education. Part of that money would be used towards a six percent raise for teachers, principals and education personnel, leaving no education personnel making less than $12 an hour. Additionally, the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department would see a $36.5 million increase in their budget that includes $4 million to provide more than 100 new protective services positions. State workers would also see anywhere from a two-four percent raise, taking the minimum wage for state employees to $12 an hour.  The budget will need to reviewed and approved by legislators. The session is set to begin on Tuesday in Santa Fe.
